What are low glycemic foods?

Low glycemic foods have little or no effect on blood sugar levels. Many of these foods contain no carbohydrates, and some low glycemic foods have healthy carbs.

Low glycemic foods have low-rate positions on the glycemic index, a numeric rating system measuring how different foods influence blood sugar levels. Low glycemic foods have a glycemic index rating of less than 55. Examples of low glycemic foods include meat, poultry, dairy, vegetables, most fruit, whole grains, legumes, seafood, seeds and nuts. Such foods guide eating plans mainly to lower blood sugar levels, especially for diabetics. However, dieticians recommend using foods containing moderate amounts of fat as part of a low glycemic diet.
