What are LPN duties?

Licensed practical nurses, or LPNs, provide basic patient care, including changing bandages, monitoring patient vital signs and updating patient records. They work under the direct supervision of registered nurses and doctors.
An LPN may check a patient’s blood pressure, collect samples and update the patient’s chart accordingly. LPNs may also help feed, bathe and clothe patients. They provide support to RNs and doctors by reviewing instructions with patients, passing patient questions and concerns to the doctors, and performing other duties as allowed by state regulations. In some states LPNs can administer medication as directed by doctors, or they can perform other duties normally outside their job descriptions. Nearly one-third of LPNs work in skilled-nursing facilities, and another one-third work in hospitals or doctor’s offices.
