The primary responsibility of a machine operator is to work with heavy machinery, including setup and general operation. Machine operators are also referred to as machinists or tool and die makers.
Machine operators work on a variety of different types of machines, from manual fabricators to computer-controlled machinery. Part of the duties of a machine operator are to ensure that the machine he is working on remains in good working order, is operating at full capacity and is kept stocked with any materials it may need to perform its task. A machine operator generally learns his trade through a variety of training, including vocational schools.
