What is magnetic media?

The term "magnetic media" is used to refer to any storage medium that uses magnetic patterns to record information. Good examples of magnetic media include computer and video tapes, hard drives and floppy discs.

Magnetic tapes feature a plastic carrier overlaid with a mold of resin blender, metal oxide particles and other components, such as fungicides and lubricants. Hard drives have an aluminum base layered with a metal matrix on both sides. Information on these mediums is stored by the alignment of magnetic particles. These mediums must be protected and stored properly to prevent degradation. They should be stored in closed metal cabinets away from excessive light and heat, and free of dust.
