Doctors do not know the exact cause of ulcers in the colon, or ulcerative colitis, according to Healthline. Researchers theorize that ulcers in the colon are hereditary or the cause is an immune system attack on the digestive track due to the bacteria that exist there, explains Live Science.
Researchers believe that certain people are at a higher risk of contracting ulcers in the colon. Individuals who have a close family member who suffers from the disease are more likely to contract it, explains Healthline. It is also more common in Caucasians and Ashkenazi Jews. Studies link drugs such as isotretinoin to ulcerative colitis as well.
