According to Mexico's 2010 national census, 80 percent of its citizens are Roman Catholic. That is a considerable decrease from the 1970 census data, when 96 percent of Mexicans self-identified as Catholics.
There is a shortage of clergy members. Mexican Catholics greatly outnumber priests by a ratio of 6,000 to 1. Several other belief systems are held by the 20 percent of Mexican citizens who are not Catholic. These include Pentecostal Christians, Jehovah's Witnesses and Baptists. In some towns, more people attend evangelical places of worship than Catholic churches. Despite the drop in numbers, Mexico has the second-largest number of Catholics in the world.
