Islam is the main religion in Turkey, with over 99 percent of residents adhering to that faith. Because of its location between Europe and the Middle East, Turkey has been home to major populations of Catholic, Orthodox Christian and Jewish residents throughout its history.

Although the flag of Turkey prominently features the star-and-crescent symbol of Islam, the nation is largely secular. In the country, all religious activity is regulated by the government and proselytization is not allowed. Turkey has had a long history of religious tolerance, even allowing religious refugees into the country during the Spanish Inquisition in the 1400s.
