What is Malcolm X famous for?

Malcolm X was known as an outspoken activist who was highly vocal about the poor treatment of blacks in the United States. He lived from 1925 to 1965 and was involved in one of the most important pushes for equal rights in American history.

Along with being critical of the treatment of blacks, Malcolm X was also a member of the Nation of Islam organization. While there, he faced conflict with other group leaders and was ordered to be silent after a controversial comment following the assassination of John F. Kennedy. He left the group and converted to become a Sunni Muslim, before being assassinated himself years later.
