Thomas Hagan, also known as Talmadge Hayer, killed Malcolm X on Feb. 21, 1965. Hagan was arrested at the scene and claimed the two other suspects were not involved. He claimed that he worked with four willing accomplices to assassinate Malcolm X; two of them were also convicted accordingly.
Hagan and his suspected accomplices, Thomas Johnson and Norman Butler, were all sentenced to 20 years to life in prison in 1966. Norman Butler was paroled in 1985 and Thomas Johnson was paroled in 1987. Thomas Hagan was granted a work release in 1988 and was released on parole in 2010.
