Scion cars are manufactured by the Toyota Corporation. As of 2015, the cars are manufactured at the Toyota Takaoka, Kanji Iwate, Tsutsumi and Fuji Heavy Industries plants, all located in Japan.
The Scion brand was created by Toyota in order to increase its appeal to younger drivers. In 1999, the company began Project Genesis to develop new automobiles for the market, and the company eventually hired the Los Angeles design group Fresh Machine to develop the first cars in the line. The first Toyota Scion automobiles, the bbX and the ccX, were unveiled in March 2002 at the New York Auto Show and were only available in California until a wider rollout in 2003 and 2004.
