The Advil website instructs users to take one 200-milligram tablet every four to six hours while symptoms are present. A second tablet can be taken if one does not provide relief from symptoms. Users are advised not to take more than six tablets within a 24-hour period.
Drugs.com warns that the maximum adult dosage of ibuprofen, the generic form of Advil, is 800 milligrams per dose or 3200 milligrams per day. To reduce the chance of stomach irritation, patients can take Advil with food or milk. Nausea, vomiting, stomach ache, black stools and coughing up blood are symptoms of overdose and require immediate medical attention.
