How many basins make up the Atlantic ocean?

The Atlantic Ocean encompasses a single basin, which surrounds the Mid-Atlantic Ridge and has an average depth of 12,000 feet. The ridge runs from the tip of Greenland to the southern tip of Africa and is the most studied mid-oceanic ridge in the world.

Ocean basins form as the result of tectonic processes releasing volcanic rock from fissures in the Earth's crust along the mid-oceanic ridges. The volcanic processes that occur at the ridges create a constant state of change, which results in fractures, faults and cracks in the Earth's crust. The largest fracture zone of the Mid-Atlantic Ridge offsets the ridge by 590 miles.
