How many biomes are there?

While scientists widely disagree on the number of biomes that exist, many believe that there are two water biomes and six land biomes. A biome is defined as an area with a characteristic climate and a specific combination of types of animals and plants.

The two water biomes are said to be marine water and fresh water, as these are the two specific habitats that underwater life thrives under. There are at least six land biomes, which include the coniferous forest, the deciduous forest, the grasslands, the deserts and the rainforests. These biomes can be distinguished based on their temperatures and annual precipitation levels.
