How many bugs does a bat eat in a night?

An ordinary brown bat can eat up to 100 percent of their body weight each night, which is about 1/2 ounce. They consume approximately 1,200 insects per hour. Insects including moths, gnats, crickets, beetles, locusts, mosquitoes, fruit flies and other bugs are frequently eaten by bats.

Not all bats eat insects. With over 1,200 known species, bats are extremely varied when it comes to what they eat. Some bats, such as the fruit bat, eat fruit. Others consume nectar found in flowers. Vampire bats, found in Mexico and other countries besides the United States, consume blood extracted from local wildlife.
