How many mosquitos do bats eat a night?

A little brown bat can consume between 600 to 1,000 mosquitoes in a single hour. A nursing little brown bat mother may consume as many as 4,500 mosquitoes in a single evening, more than her own body weight in insects.

There are about 1,240 species of bats worldwide, comprising approximately 20 percent of all classified species of mammal. About 70 percent of bats are insectivores that use echolocation to hunt. Most insect-eating bats sleep during the daytime and are only active for a few hours in the evening when insects are the most plentiful. Most are opportunistic feeders, preying on mosquitoes, moths, beetles or any other insects they can catch.
