What do male mosquitoes eat?

Male and female mosquitoes eat plant nectar and honeydew, which is a sticky fluid produced by aphids, to get enough nourishment to live. Only the female needs to eat blood to produce eggs.

Although each species of mosquito has its own preference, they eat a variety of plants. The male and female Aedes mosquito enjoys dining on Canada plum, pin cherry and other woodland plants. Arctic mosquitoes prefer the nectar of a small, white arctic flower called Dryas integrifolia. Both male and female mosquito larvae live in water and eat microscopic particles floating in the water. They have brush-like structures around their mouths that help filter the particles out of the water.
