When trying to lose weight, consume approximately 20 grams of carbohydrates per day, according to the weight loss program Atkins. While a little fluctuation is expected and acceptable, no more than 22 grams, and no less than 18, per day should be consumed.
While it is not necessary to maintain a strict diet consisting only of diet foods, Atkins does provide a list of recommended foods for each phase of its program. However, when adhering to a low-carb diet, most people choose to merely count carbohydrates in foods they normally eat, including proteins and fats, and to stay below the threshold for the particular phase.
