Brigham Young had 57 known children. In addition to those children, he also had as many as 56 wives, though he only admitted to having a conjugal relationship with 15 or 16 of them.
Many of the women who Brigham Young married were widowed or elderly. He married them to offer them protection. In fact, Young is quoted by saying that many of those wives were "old ladies," and he considered them to be more of a mother figure than a wife. He divorced 10 of these wives, and upon his death in 1877, there were 23 of his wives still alive.
