How many children did Rudyard Kipling have?

Rudyard Kipling, the influential English author of "The Jungle Book,? "The Man Who Would Be King" and "Gunga Din," fathered three children with wife Caroline Starr Balestier. His daughters Josephine and Elsie were born near Brattleboro, Vt., while his son John was born in Rottingdean, England.

Josephine, born in 1893, fell gravely ill with pneumonia and died in 1899. Elsie dedicated herself to philanthropy and the creation of the Kipling archive, which she left to the National Trust after her death in 1976. John became a second lieutenant in the Irish Guard in 1915 and died in action in France during the Battle of Loos.
