How many Christmas trees are sold each year?

According to the National Christmas Tree Association, there were 24.5 million real trees and 10.9 million fake trees purchased in the United States in 2012. This equates to a total of 35.4 million Christmas trees.

Of the real trees purchased in 2012, 85% were pre-cut trees. The remainder were considered "cut-my-own" trees which were harvested by the consumer and purchased at a Choose & Cut farm. Approximately $1.01 billion was spent on Christmas trees in 2012. The National Gardening Association ranks the Balsam Fir as the most popular Christmas tree. The Douglas Fir and the Frasier Fir were ranked second and third, respectively.
