Corn, also commonly known as "maize," is made up of 10 chromosomes. These chromosomes contain approximately 32,000 genes, compared to just 20,000 genes in human DNA.
The genetic makeup of corn contains approximately 2 billion bases of DNA, according to a 2009 article in ScienceDaily. Like other plants, corn has more than one genome; corn has two separate genomes with four copies of its genes. The DNA sequencing project to examine the genetic properties of corn began in 2005. A variety of corn classified as B73, known for high grain yields, was sequenced at Washington University's Genome Center. In 2009, corn was the largest plant genome to be sequenced.
