There are 67 counties in the State of Florida. These 67 counties encompass 410 municipalities, 282 cities, 109 towns and 19 villages, home to over 17 million citizens.

There were two counties in Florida when it became a territory of the United States in 1821: Escambia County and St. John's County. The last county created was Gilchrist County, in 1925. The largest county in Florida is Palm Beach County, and the most populous county is Miami-Dade County.
