A county map of Kentucky shows 120 counties in the state, one of the larger number of counties in a single state in the country. Franklin County is home to the state capital of Frankfort.

The easternmost county in Kentucky is Pike County, which is also the state's largest in area. It borders both Virginia and West Virginia, and its county seat is Pikeville. The southernmost counties are Fulton, Hickman, Graves and Calloway. Fulton County is also the westernmost county in the state. Boone, Kenton and Campbell are the counties located farthest to the north. The most populous county in the state as of 2015 is Jefferson County. Its county seat, Louisville, is the largest city in Kentucky.
