How many different counties make up VA?

The state of Virginia has 95 counties, as of 2015. When the colonial legislature originally set up the network of counties, there were more, but the boundaries of Virginia were larger then, and some of the original counties have been consolidated.

The colonial legislature in Virginia set up the network of counties in the 1630s to provide more local administration for dealing with land title transfers, will processing and minor crime administration. All of the 95 counties had their boundaries shifted at one point or another during the intervening years. Many of the county names in Virginia come from people important to the history of the colony and state.
