How many died at Pearl Harbor?

More than 2,500 people were killed when Japanese planes attacked Pearl Harbor, Hawaii, on Dec. 7, 1941. The attack on a U.S. military base began at 7:55 a.m. Hawaii time and lasted less than two hours, also resulting in the loss of 300 airplanes and 18 American ships.

The attack killed 1,177 crewmen aboard the U.S.S. Arizona, accounting for nearly half of all casualties sustained by day's end, according to History.com. Twenty-three pairs of brothers and all 21 members of the U.S. Navy's Band Unit 22 perished on the Arizona. The attack on Pearl Harbor forced the United States into war with Japan.
