How many feet can you park from a stop sign?

The closest a car can be parked in advance of a stop sign varies from state to state. Certain states and counties have clearly defined restrictions while others do not.
Many states, such as California, do not list a statewide maximum distance required, regarding the proximity of parked cars to stop signs. However, such vehicle codes can sometimes be ascertained by checking with city ordinances. In San Diego, for example, it is illegal for a car to be parked within 50 feet of a stop or yield sign.
Curb sides can also be an indicator. Many curbs around intersections and stop signs are painted red, prohibiting parking in that area.
