The first people to make marshmallows were the ancient Egyptians, the French and the British. They made marshmallows from the roots of the mallow plant, and the marshmallows were eaten as medicine to soothe sore throats. Eventually, people began using marshmallows as a candy instead of a medicine, and in the 1800s, gelatin was substituted for the mallow root. Alex Doumak designed the process of making marshmallows in their familiar tubular form in 1948.
