How many ounces can the human stomach hold?

The stomach is capable of holding up to 135 1/4 ounces of food, or 4 liters; however, most people are most comfortable when the stomach holds only 34 to 68 ounces. A stomach that's too full can't process food properly, which leads to discomfort.

The stomach holds food for between one and two hours. During that time, secretions and hormones from the stomach, liver, pancreas, gallbladder and intestines help digest the food.

People who undergo some forms of bariatric or weight loss surgery have the amount of food their stomachs can hold drastically reduced. This causes the stomach to feel full more quickly, thus cutting down on how much the patient eats.
