How many passengers were on the Titanic?

There were 2,240 passengers on board the Titanic when it made its maiden voyage on April 10, 1912. Some of the world's wealthiest industrialists, celebrities and high-ranking officials are included in that total, along with over 700 third-class passengers and 900 crewmen.
More than 1,500 people died when Titanic sunk after sideswiping an iceberg during the early morning of April 15. The 16 lifeboats and four Engelhardt "collapsibles" on board could only carry 1,178 people. Many of the lifeboats, however, were not filled to capacity when they were lowered off of the deck, and only 705 people escaped on them.
