How many people were on the Titanic when it sank?

Official reports vary, but the consensus is that there were between 2,200 and 2,340 passengers and crew members on board the Titanic when it sank. Of that number, 885 were crew members.
Contrary to popular belief, it is rumored that the majority of the those who died in the disaster were actually crew members and not passengers. Unsurprisingly, the majority of passenger deaths occurred among 3rd class passengers. This was due primarily to the location of steerage in the lower parts of the ship, which were hit first and hardest with water when the ship collided with the iceberg. Additionally, of all the deaths, only a few more than 100 were women.
