During the sinking of the Lusitania, approximately 1,192 of its 1,960 passengers perished. Four additional casualties were recorded in the months after the sinking, leaving only 764 survivors. The Lusitania was sunk by a torpedo from the German U-20 u-boat on May 7, 1915.
The ship was sunk as it was travelling from the United States to Great Britain. As of 2015, the wreckage of the ship lies and 300 feet underwater and approximately 11 miles south of Old Head of Kinsale in Ireland. The ship reportedly sunk in only 18 minutes. At the time of its sinking, the ship was carrying war materials for the British Army and numerous American civilians.
