Although the precise number is disputed, approximately 1,500 people are believed to have died in the sinking of the Titanic. Separate investigations conducted by the United State Senate and British authorities placed the number at 1,517 and 1,490, respectively.
Most of the recorded deaths were of male passengers traveling in Third Class (or Steerage). These amounted to 391 deaths out of a total 450 male passengers in Steerage.
By contrast, only four female passengers in First Class died, which equates to a total survival rate of 97 percent.
The total number of deaths ranks the sinking of the Titanic as one of the worst peacetime sinkings in history.
