How many people die from blizzards each year?

According to the National Weather Service, in 2012, there were 28 deaths related to winter-weather hazards. The United States Search and Rescue Team reveals that only 25 percent of deaths are due to ice and snow.

A majority of ice and snow deaths happen inside of automobiles. When stuck in a vehicle during a blizzard, people should roll the window down a little to allow fresh air inside. This reduces the risk of being poisoned by deadly carbon monoxide gas. Before running the engine, experts recommend checking to make sure the exhaust pipe is not blocked. The engine can be kept running at 10-minute intervals for warmth.
