How many people have died while climbing K2?

As of July 2014, 84 climbers have died while climbing K2. These deaths occur when climbers attempt to reach the summit and while they are descending.

Between 1954 and 2014, only 337 climbers have reached the summit of K2. Due to unpredictable weather, harsh conditions such as avalanches and the high death rate among climbers, K2 is also called Savage Mountain. No one has successfully climbed K2 during the winter. Climbers have about a 27 percent chance of dying on K2, as opposed to 9 percent on Mount Everest.

K2 was so named because it was the second mountain recorded in the Karakoram Range by British surveyor Thomas George Montgomerie.
