How many people live near Mt. Fuji?

Just 570 residents live within 5 kilometers of Japan's Mt. Fuji, and an estimated 1,759 live within 10 kilometers of the mountain. More than 900,000 people live within 30 kilometers of Japan's highest peak; the largest surrounding cities are Fuji Nomiya, Fuji Yoshida and Gotemba.
While more than 200,000 people climb the mountain each year, the rough terrain and colder temperatures near the mountain make living nearby less desirable than living in the drier flat lands further away. While the volcano was last active in 1707, the fear of an eruption could also be a factor, as experts warn that as many as 750,000 people would be forced to evacuate if a major eruption were to occur.
