About 4 million people retire every year, as of 2014. From 2014 to 2034, about 80 million people are expected to retire, and this wave of retirements is seen as a significant challenge for the Social Security and Medicare systems in the United States.
Between 1946 and 1964, 76 million people were born in the United States. This phenomenon is commonly referred to as the baby boom. While some people die before reaching retirement age and others retire at different ages, immigrants increase the number of retirees to 80 million. The Social Security Administration may lose about 33 percent of the U.S. workforce to retirement in 2015.
