The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimates that 445 injuries were sustained as a result of Hurricane Andrew. This figure is obtained from the reports of coroners and emergency departments in the affected areas.
The CDC defines a Hurricane-Andrew-related injury to be an incident severe enough to cause death or to require a visit to the emergency room for treatment. The incident must have occurred within the geographic areas affected by the hurricane, and the injury must be related to the preparation, experience or aftermath of the storm. By this definition, Hurricane Andrew injured 445 people and killed 17 more, eight of whom died before the storm made landfall.
