Hurricane Andrew was directly responsible for 23 deaths in the United States and three in the Bahamas. NOAA also lists 39 indirect deaths as a result of the storm, bringing the total to 65.
In addition, the Miami Herald reported on Jan. 31 1993, that a further 43 deaths could be indirectly attributed to Andrew based on information from the Dade County medical examiner. Of the 23 deaths in the United States directly caused by the Hurricane, 15 of them were people in Dade County, Florida, with the other eight coming from Louisiana. Many of the indirect deaths were recorded during the recovery phase after the storm had passed.
