Hurricane Ike was responsible for 195 recorded casualties spread out among several Caribbean nations and the Gulf states of the U.S. The storm was the third major hurricane of the 2008 season, and in early September, it caused an estimated $37.5 billion in damages throughout the region.
The United States sustained the highest number of casualties from Ike, with 112 killed and 23 missing. Of this toll, the coastal areas of Texas bore the brunt, with 84 people killed in the devastation. Haiti, still reeling from a trio of destructive hurricanes earlier that year, sustained 74 casualties as well as significant property damage.
