The amount of points for a speeding ticket varies depending on the offender's state and how many miles per hour above the speed limit the offender was driving. If the offender wasn't going more than 10 miles per hour above the limit, the ticket is usually one or two points.
In California, a standard speeding ticket is one point, as of 2014. Most states add more points to the offender's driving record once a certain threshold above the speed limit is reached. Driving more than 16 miles per hour above the limit results in four points in certain states. Once a certain number of points is accumulated, a driver's license can be suspended. Also, insurance companies can raise rates for a driver based on his or her points.
