The average cubic yard of topsoil weighs 2,000 pounds, or 1 ton. Very dry topsoil can weigh as little as 1,700 pounds, whereas wet topsoil can weigh much more.
Many half-ton pickup trucks, such as Ford F150s and Chevrolet 1500s, can carry a maximum of 1 cubic yard of topsoil. Larger trucks can haul up to 2 cubic yards. Drivers must factor in the vehicle's available cargo space and its weight limitations.
A single cubic yard of topsoil can cover 324 square feet at a 1-inch depth, 108 square feet at a 3-inch depth or 54 square feet at a 6-inch depth.
