According to the World Wildlife Fund, as of 2014, there are fewer than 10,000 red pandas left in the world. Red pandas are listed as vulnerable on the IUCN Red List, only one step above an endangered status.
The number of red pandas in the world is declining due to several factors, including deforestation and poaching. Red pandas are hunted for their unique pelts in countries like China and Myanmar. Some red pandas are killed when they wander into traps meant for other animals, such as wild pigs and deer.
Almost 50 percent of the red panda population lives in the Himalayas.
