How many red wolves are left?

The red wolf has been an endangered species for almost half a century, yet there are thought to be several hundred as of 2014, many in captivity. Red wolves were once considered extinct, but captive-bred red wolves have been released into the wild and are slowly repopulating.

Although most of the red wolves in existence today are held and bred in captivity, there are still some wild red wolves in places such as North and South Carolina. Several protection plans are in place, such as the Red Wolf Recovery Program, in the hopes that they continue to repopulate and thrive.
