From the period of 2003 to 2014, a total of 4,807 soldiers died in Iraq, otherwise known as Operation Iraqi Freedom. These include 4,489 U.S. soldiers, 179 U.K. soldiers and 139 soldiers from other countries.
The year with the highest number of American casualties was 2007, during which the country lost 904 soldiers. However, the very next year the amount dropped to 312, the lowest number since the beginning of the war. No soldiers from the U.K. were lost after 2009. The last U.S. troops in patrol or in combat operations left Iraq and crossed the border into Kuwait on Dec. 18, 2011.
