How many terms can a governor serve?

The term limits for a state governor is determined by the individual state's laws. New Jersey governors, for example, can serve an unlimited number of terms, but they can only serve two terms consecutively. Each term is limited to four years.

While most state's laws allow the governor to serve a maximum of four years straight, New Hampshire and Vermont allow only two-year tenures. Virginia is the only state whose personal constitution prohibits a governor from holding office for two terms in a row, although after a four-year term out of office, a previous governor can run again. As of 2015, Iowa holds the record for having the longest-serving governor.
