According to Johns Hopkins, the normal respiration rate for a resting human is 12 to 20 breaths per minute (bpm). This number varies considerably throughout the day, rising during and immediately after periods of intense physical activity and dropping somewhat during sleep.
Children maintain a higher rate of respiration than adults. The normal resting range for a 6-year-old child is 18 to 25 bpm, and a 3-year-old child typically maintains a resting rate of 20 to 30 bpm. Very young children have the highest rates, with a 6-month-old averaging 25 to 40 bpm and a 6-week-old baby cycling through between 30 and 60 breaths every minute even when resting.
