The reason for this is that researchers still consider white lions as a part of the standard lion species. This makes it difficult to protect the lions legally, so the Global White Lion Protection Trust is working to separate white lions from the standard lion by making the white lion a "subspecies of lion" reports the Daily Mail. The white lion lives almost exclusively in conservation programs but is slowly being reintroduced into the wild.
