How many Xbox consoles have been sold worldwide?

The original Xbox sold 24 million units worldwide from the time of its release on November 15, 2001, to the debut of the Xbox 360 in November 2005. The Xbox was particularly successful in North America, selling 16 million units during its life cycle. By comparison, it only sold 2 million units in Asia.

The Xbox did poorly in the Japan market as it was competing against established brands such as Sony and Nintendo. Due to a cultural clash regarding its large size, the Xbox only sold 450,000 units in the Japanese market. During its market competition with Sony's PlayStation 2, the Xbox rarely managed to outsell its counterpart. PlayStation 2 sold 106 million units during its product life cycle.
