The Han Dynasty ruled from 206 B.C. to 220 A.D. with only a small interruption in the middle, making for a rule of more than 400 years. It had two main periods: the Western Han from 206 B.C. to 9 A.D. and Eastern Han from 25 A.D. to 220 A.D.
The Han Dynasty ushered in a period of prosperity and attention to the arts for the Chinese. For instance, calligraphy became a dominant art form. The dynasty began with Liu Bang in 206 B.C. and ended with Liu Xie in 220 A.D. Confucianism also flourished in this time period, and many schools were built for its study.
