Marsh grass is also referred to as cord grass. There are several types of marsh grass, each having a unique scientific name. One popular marsh grass, the cattail, is known as Typha latifolia, while spike grass is designated as Distichlis spicata.
Other types of marsh grass include oyster grass (Spartina alterniflora), saltmeadow cord grass (Spartina patens) and saw grass (Cladium jamaicense).
Marsh grasses are coarse plants with soft stems that thrive best in wet conditions. They may exist in fresh or saltwater wetland areas. Marsh grasses are commonly found in the eastern, western and southern areas of the United States.
